2013 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Roomy suv with contemporary technology. introductionthe ford explorer is one the best seven-passenger sport-utility vehicles available. It delivers the function and family friendly features of a minivan with the rugged appeal of an suv.  new for 2013 is an explorer sport trim with a twin-turbocharged version of ford's 3. 5-liter v6 engine, a sport-tuned suspension and all-wheel-drive. Using premium gas, explorer sport makes up to 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque.  new options on 2013 explorer limited models include a lane departure warning system, heated steering wheel and a power tilt-and-telescoping steering column. All 2013 explorer models come standard with a front-passenger knee airbag.  this latest generation of the ford explorer, introduced for 2011, features a one-piece, unibody design rather than a ladder-type truck frame with a separate, bolted on body. The result is more car-like driving dynamics, as well as significant weight savings, which translates to better fuel economy.  powering all 2013 ford explorer models except the sport is 3. 5-liter v6 that makes 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It also includes hill start assist and hill descent control.  fuel economy with the base v6 engine on front-wheel-drive explorer models is an epa-estimated 17/24 mpg city/highway, or 17/23 mpg city/highway on 4wd models.  even with regular all-season tires, the explorer will blast through sand or traverse deep ditches and steep hills, no problem. It has more power than the standard v6 in the previous-generation explorer, with 240 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, and delivers an epa-estimated 20/28 mpg city/highway.  the 2. 0 ecoboost is sufficiently powerful, and acceptable if mileage is the absolute priority. We prefer the standard 290-horspower v6 with its smooth, strong acceleration.  explorer's chassis is super rigid, which not only makes for great crash-test scores, but also a quiet cabin, excellent ride quality and solid handling that belies the explorer's considerable size.  inside, there is plenty of legroom in the second row, real space for passengers in the third, and up to 80. 7 cubic-feet of cargo space. It can be reconfigured in seconds, with split rear seats that fold with a button on each side and bounce back up with the pull of a lever. The interior is smartly styled and well finished. The materials and build quality are quite good.  the base explorer comes well equipped. The upgraded limited trim is leather-upholstered, with heated-seats and offered with premium audio, navigation and rear-seat dvd entertainment. The myfordtouch interface is optional, but can be cumbersome and at least a little annoying.  other suvs to consider in this class include the buick enclave, chevrolet traverse, dodge durango, gmc acadia, honda pilot or mazda cx-9. Fuel economy is an epa-estimated17/24 mpg city/highway and 17/23 mpg city/highway on 4wd models. Of torque with an epa-estimated 20/28 mpg city/highway.  explorer 29,100) comes standard with fabric upholstery, air conditioning, a six-way power driver seat with manual recline, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, power windows, locks and outside mirrors, a trip computer, 60/40 split-folding second-row seats, 50/50 split third-row seats, a six-speaker audio system with single cd player and auxiliary audio jack, rear privacy glass, roof rails and 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers. Options include a tow package 570) and a sync with myford pakage 295), which adds voice activation, bluetooth and siriussx satellite radio capability with a six-month subscription.  explorer xlt 32,680) adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, ford's sync voice activation with satellite radio capability, a usb audio port, a keyless entry touchpad on the driver's door, automatic headlamps, rear parking sensors and 18-inch alloy wheels.  explorer limited 38,100) gets leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 12-speaker sony audio system with hd radio, power adjustable pedals with memory, a cargo net, a rearview camera, remote start, a 110-volt outlet, 20-inch painted aluminum wheels, and the myfordtouch touchscreen interface. Of torque (using premium fuel). Epa fuel economy estimates are 16/22 mpg city/highway. Standard features include sport front seats with fabric upholstery, unique interior and exterior trim, and many of the standard features found on the limited model.  safety features include ford's curve control, which monitors vehicle speed going into a corner and applies braking to individual wheels as needed, as well as mykey, which allows owners to set limits for vehicle speed and stereo volume. Other standard safety features include front side airbags, side curtain airbags, a front passenger knee airbag, stability control, traction control and trailer sway control.  optional safety features include a blind spot warning system with cross-traffic alert on explorer xlt models and above. Limited and sport models also get an available lane-departure warning and keeping system, as well as forward collision warning. walkaroundthe ford explorer is rugged but refined, familiar but fresh. It's a foot longer than the ford edge crossover, a few inches shorter than the dodge durango suv and about eight inches shorter than the chevy traverse. The amber indicators sweep back like narrow wings atop tidy main projector beams. The plastic grille is gray on the base explorer, body-colored on the xlt and satin-chrome on the limited. The hood looks short from the side, but long when looking straight down it. It's got two parallel humps and a scoop in the center. Rear taillights are led, and also look good.  the window outline is clean, bold and symmetrical, with blackened a-, b-, and d-pillars, and body-colored c-pillars that slant down and back and impart forward motion to the vehicle. The fender flares are inspired by the mustang and body sides follow the lines of the taurus. The three-bar grille strikes resemble those of the range rover, which was once-upon-a-time a member of the ford family.  wheels are 17-inch steel with plastic covers on the base explorer, 10-spoke 18-inch painted aluminum on the xlt, and 20-inch painted aluminum with spokes like flower petals on the limited. The optional 20-inch polished aluminum wheels have spokes like shriveling flower petals or crab pincers, and don't do justice to the car. interiorfit and finish inside the explorer is excellent, and we particularly like the limited's leather seats.  the front seats sit up high, which is good because the hood looks long from the driver's seat. The slanted center stack has a clean design and uses stylish satin-finish trim materials. The doors have metal speaker grilles, and curve into the dash panel. There's a big glovebox with a shelf, leather grab handles and armrests on explorers with leather interior, and long door pockets with space for a bottle.  one reason we like the base model is its conventional gauges, relatively simple 4. 2-inch lcd screen at the top of the center stack, and familiar mechanical knobs below. The base explorer doesn't come with the myfordtouch driver connect technology, and neither does the xlt, unless it's chosen as an option.  cars equipped with myfordtouch have two driver-configurable lcd screens in front of the driver on either side a big speedometer, and an 8-inch color touch screen at the top of the center stack. Directional stability is good, steering response is quick, and body lean is well controlled for a heavy vehicle.  The Sport Trac's high ride height means the ride quality gets a bit busy over potholed or broken pavement, but otherwise, the ride is smooth, thanks in part to an independent rear suspension that also aids handling

2003 ford explorer sport trac review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The ford explorer sport trac can handle either of these tasks.  sport trac is an suv with a pickup bed. It has an outdoorsman's interior designed for easy cleaning and a bed made of a nearly impervious composite material. Yet sport trac can carry a family of five in comfort.  as its name implies, the explorer sport trac is based on the ford explorer, the best selling sport-utility in america. Sport trac is based on the previous-generation explorer, however, so it does not benefit from the 2003 explorer's independent rear suspension and other advances. But ford has enhanced sport trac's safety systems for 2003. Seat belts are now height-adjustable and are fitted with pre-tensioners.  ford's new safety canopy side-curtain air bag system with rollover sensors is available for 2003 sport tracs (except early models). Safety canopy air bags offer head protection in a side impact and remain inflated longer than conventional air bags, helping prevent occupants from being ejected in a rollover.  . lineupford revised the sport trac lineup for 2003. A 4. 0-liter v6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission come standard on all explorer sport tracs. Other options include a limited slip rear differential 355) for the standard 3. 73- or heavy-towing 4. 10-ratio axle. A cargo cage 195) and hard tonneau cover 590) are available. Sport trac looks like a box, twice over. First comes the five-seat cabin, and then the bed trailing behind, like a separate unit. The bed walls are nearly 20 inches high. Ford engineers say they dragged cinder blocks over it and threw in steel pipes and heavy angle iron without causing any appreciable damage. Any marring or scratching blends in with the black grained finish, anyway. It can be a useful device, but won't hold back dirt or other loose material. When flipped inside the bed, the bed extender creates a compartment 25 by 45 inches that can keep grocery bags and keep other small items from sliding around. It's removable, but much fiddling to get it out and back in. A more simple, plastic bed divider is also available along with a lightweight, lockable two-piece hard tonneau cover.  the standard roof rack consists of just two longitudinal bars, with the crossbars sold as an accessory. When we loaded a nine-foot-long duffel bag full of sailing gear, we had to lay it directly on top of the paintwork.  . interiorsport trac's cabin is designed to be durable. Door panels are resilient plastic. Flooring is made of a textured composite rubber easily swept with a whisk broom or cleaned with water. Ford says it also reduces noise. Cloth is found only on the seats and headliner. The rest is ready for mud.  the front bucket seats have been upgraded for 2003. Ford has changed the interior colors for 2003. We weren't crazy about the looks of last year's dark brown gabardine upholstery, although it appeared easy to clean.  the rear seats are roomy. Rear legroom is ample at 37. 8 inches, a full seven inches more than in the nissan frontier crew cab pickup. The rear seats split 60/40 and fold down without having to remove the headrests, quickly expanding cargo space inside the cabin. The back seat incorporates three child seat tether anchors.  the center console provides big fixed cup holders in front, forward of the armrest, along with a little slot good for coins and tickets. Forward of that is another tray with two more slots, one of them fairly large.  a removable nylon pack under the center armrest enables sport trac drivers to carry their console contents with them. It even has a shoulder strap. But we found it more awkward to use in the vehicle than a fixed, rigid compartment. We rarely used it, because we didn't want to deal with first raising the armrest, then lifting the limp material top secured by velcro.  the parking brake requires a long reach to release, which we found irritating.  comfort group 1230) for the xlt adds six-way power for the driver's seat and power lumbar support for both driver and passenger; plus a deluxe floor console with auxiliary rear-seat climate and audio controls; an overhead console with map lights, a digital compass and an outside temperature gauge; automatic headlights; and an electrochromic rear-view mirror. The compass and outside temperature gauge are highly useful and appreciated tools that more carmakers should fit in their vehicles, especially any vehicle that may head into the backcountry.  the leather seating option 655) for the xlt now includes electric heat and six-way power and adjustable lumbar support for both driver and passenger.  a power rear window slides up and down, which the kids in the back seat will love. Besides providing flow-through ventilation, it allows rear-seat passengers to reach through and grab things out of the bed, such as drinks from a cooler.  . driving impressionexplorer sport trac is powered by ford's 210-horsepower 4. 0-liter v6. It's a sophisticated engine, with overhead cams, an aluminum head and aluminum pistons. It likes to rev, and it's smooth, responsive and great fun at speed.  for 2003, ford increased its torque rating slightly (from 237 foot-pounds to 240), but more important the peak torque comes at 3000 rpm instead of 3750 rpm. More power at lower rpm should make the sport trac more responsive around town and pulling away from a stop. The revised power curve should also put more snap in the sport trac's throttle response at highway speeds. At 75 mph, last year's model loafed at a mere 2650 rpm.  the optional 4. 10 ratio should improve acceleration performance and towing performance, but at the expense of gas mileage because the engine will be revving higher at any given speed.  sport trac comes with a five-speed automatic that matches the engine for smoothness and sophistication. More gears usually means closer ratios. So we were surprised by how far the tach needle jumped when the transmission kicked down on the 2002 model. When it upshited again it dropped back to 3500 rpm. A low-range mode is ready for heavy snow, deep mud or soft sand.  to make the sport trac, ford lengthened the previous-generation explorer's frame more than 14 inches, to 206 inches on a 126-inch wheelbase. Lateral stiffness is increased with a tubular crossmember and thicker side rails. Urethane body mounts smooth out the ride. Sport trac doesn't ride as smoothly as the newest generation explorer, however, which boasts an independent rear suspension and many other im. 2007 ford explorer sport trac review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, bigger and better. introductionford has changed almost everything about the sport trac for 2007.  essentially, a ford explorer with a pickup bed, the sport trac has grown in length and in width for 2007, and this has translated directly into more room inside for people and out back for cargo.  a new v8 engine is available that generates 292 horsepower along with an equally new six-speed automatic transmission. While this has kicked performance up a notch or two, just as important is what it's done for payload and towing capacity; a v8 4x2 sport trac is now rated to tow up to 6800 pounds. A mildly re-tuned version of the 4. 0-liter v6 is also available and it comes with a five-speed automatic. Redesigned seats are lighter and take up less room. Even honda has entered the truck business with its ridgeline, a unique vehicle in looks and construction with groundbreaking features.  ford has legacy, though, and a faithful following. For these, the new sport trac should be welcome, if a bit overdue. The price, as much as $2000 less than the 2005 model, should help, too. lineupthe new 2007 ford explorer sport trac comes in two trim levels, the xlt 24,245) and the limited 25,845). The 4. 0-liter v6 with five-speed automatic transmission comes standard on both trim levels. The 4. 6-liter v8 is an option for both trim levels 1200) and comes with a six-speed automatic.  the xlt comes standard with cloth upholstery, manually adjusted bucket seats, 60/40-split bench seat in back. Manual air conditioning is standard. Tilt steering wheel and cruise control are standard, as are power windows, door locks and foldaway, outside mirrors, and an am/fm/cd/mp3 stereo. Heavy duty berber floor mats dress up the utilitarian, rubber floor covering. The limited comes standard with a leather-wrapped shift knob and p235/65r18 tires on machined aluminum wheels as original equipment. Sundry exterior trim pieces that are painted black on the xlt change to body color or silver on the limited. Safety canopy side-curtain airbags with extended inflation to protect the head in side impacts and rollovers are optional 560). walkaroundif the 2007 sport trac looks larger than the '05, and very much like the 2006 ford explorer, that's because it is, and because it does. At least from just behind the front doors forward, that is, all of which it shares with the current explorer. This is part of ford's plan to push brand identity, and why the fronts of ford's light duty trucks, be they pickups or suvs, wear many of the same design features, including the chrome-framed grille, bumper centerpiece and lower air intake. And the full, wraparound, body-color lower fascia above the blacked-out front air dam. And the signature, geometric housings for the compound headlights/running lights. It's also two inches wider than the '05 sport trac; in track (the distance between the tires side to side), too, giving the new sport trac more bulk and a more confident stance.  it's in length that the 2007 sport trac changes most dramatically. Wheelbase (distance between the tires front to rear) extends by almost five inches, overall length (bumper to bumper) about the same. Oddly, in these two measures the new sport trac also surpasses the explorer, by almost 17 inches in both. Thus, while the explorer is the more people-oriented of the two, the sport trac's longer wheelbase promises a less choppy, more controlled ride. The dodge dakota quad cab alone exceeds the sport trac in wheelbase and overall length, by less than an inch in the former but by more than eight inches in the latter. Only by parking the '07 sport trac next to the '05 are the differences in their lengths apparent, as the stylists have retained the proportions between cabin and bed. What extra expanse there is along the '07's flanks has been dedicated to wider door openings over blank sheetmetal. More defined and more sharply creased wheel openings further de-emphasize the added length.  from the rear, well, what else can be said. It looks like a ford pickup. One distinctive aspect is that the sides of the bed and the tailgate rise as much as three inches higher than is the norm in the segment. While this increases the space enclosed by the bed, it definitely makes hefting boxes and bags up and over into the more of a strain, a painful trait it shares with the honda ridgeline, with sides only a half-inch shorter. By making the sport trac look taller, it also raises the sport trac's visual center of gravity, although the wider body and wider track help some to reduce this impression. interiorinside, the 2007 ford sport trac looks a lot like the explorer cabin. Not that it lacks anything by way of necessities or has been saddled with an abbreviated option list, but there's more borrowed than new. The sport trac shares virtually all of its interior, from trim to seat frames, with the explorer.  as far as the instruments go, this is good. Ford has cleaned up these elements nicely. They're less busy, quieter, easier to scan and use than those in the previous-generation model. Fuel and coolant gauges could be larger and located closer to line of sight than tucked away in the lower, outer quadrants of the tachometer and speedometer, but otherwise the instrument cluster is a delight in its simplicity. Same for the center stack, which although packed with functions, is intuitively organized, with readily deciphered controls and displays. We still long for a tuning knob instead of the sport trac's slow scanning rocker switch.  the optional navigation system pushes the audio controls to the side and either gangs some functions or transfers them to the lcd screen. It's still a clean look, though, and the vent registers stay where they were. The only real concern here is with the number of components making up the dash assembly. The fewer the components the better, generally speaking, to reduce the number of squeaks as the miles pile up, and the sport trac's dash has one of the highest counts we've seen.  seats are comfortable, although the bottom cushions front and rear could provide more thigh support. Room in the rear doorways for feet when climbing in and out is cramped, but once inside, there's decent area beneath the front seats, which have been re-worked to save weight and space. All five seating positions get three-point seatbelts, but only the front seats and the outboard rear seats get the adjustable, full-size head restraints. Comparatively speaking, the '07 sport trac's interior lands squarely in the middle of the segment. The nissan frontier and toyota tacoma have a few tenths of an inch more front seat headroom, the honda ridgeline almost an inch. The frontier and the ridgeline are tops in rear seat headroom, but again by only tenths of an inch. The chevy colorado has an inch and a half more front seat legroom but almost two inches less rear seat legroom. The glove box is adequate.

2009 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. For many years, the ford explorer has been one of the best-selling suvs in the market. All trims can be equipped with either a 210-hp 4. 0-liter v6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission, or a 292-hp 4. 6-liter v8 engine and six-speed automatic transmission. Limited trims are outfitted with a power-folding third row seat for 2009 (previously manual fold-flat); on xlt and eddie bauer trims, three-row seating is optional, increasing capacity to seven passengers. Standard safety features on every explorer include advancetrac with roll stability control, anti-lock disc brakes and a tire pressure monitoring system, as well as dual front, front side-impact and side-curtain airbags. For 2009, the ford explorer carries over with minor adjustments to standard equipment and restructured option groups, including a new xlt sport package. Satellite radio is now standard on eddie bauer and limited trims, while a new trailer sway control feature is incorporated into the stability control system on all trims. Additionally, all-wheel drive explorer models now get the xlt trim level. Sport Package
